![]() ![]() ![]() If you’re the kind of person who likes Xmen or Harry Potter you would definitely love this book. Since the beginning, I fell in love with the writing, never knew that simple sentences can be so fun to read, so inspiring that it takes us entirely to another world. Harry Potter! It has that kind of easy reading but still enterntaining. I must admit that I didn’t feel like this since. It is really dark fantasy at its finest! Discovring unique characters with peculiar characteristics, you will be enrolling on adventures one after the other. The cover might look spooky but you’ll understand as you read the book that the photographs are just an element to the story ( a marvellous element I must add). It has funny lines that I find myself laughing out loud! It also has some suspense and chilly moments but overall it’s not a horror story at all. The story was gripping, a very well put together novel. This is my series coup de coeur this summer.♥♥♥ Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children : ★★★★★ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I’ve read The Irresistible Miss Peppiwell by Stacy Reid and it really fascinated me in a heartbeat so I didn’t hesitate to grab The Duke’s Shotgun Wedding and have it a go. “You came into my life and completely turned it upside down, when all I wanted was a biddable wife to give me an heir.” And he intends to thoroughly take his pleasure with her… and demands his own satisfaction in return. For Sebastian is in need of a wife. And to find a wife with spirit and fire – even if she means to only marry for his money – would be a great prize indeed. ![]() Even if it means demanding the hand of the intense and foreboding Duke himself… But she’s made the first move against a very dangerous opponent… For Sebastian Thornton is no stripling to be trifled with. The lady has played her hand. Now it’s his turn. For Lady Jocelyn demands satisfaction – and she will have it at any cost. If the only way to save her family’s estate and reputation is by aiming a small pistol at the Duke of Calydon, then so be it. But Lady Jocelyn Rathbourne’s will remains strong. As far as rash decisions go, it was formidable. ![]() ![]() ![]() Though the news of his mother’s death may be heartbreaking or even overwhelming, Meursault appears to be perturbed about the untimely date of the death. Faithfully yours.” That doesn’t mean anything. ![]() I got a telegram from home: “Mother deceased. Thus, in The Stranger, Camus employs a shift in writing style, which transitions from a clear and direct style towards the usage of expressive and descriptive sentences, in order to emphasize the change in Meursault’s perspective.Ĭamus introduces an objective perspective and a direct writing style in the opening paragraph of the novel, “Maman died today. With a change in the writing style, Meursault is revealed as reflective and responsive to events around him. There are detailed descriptions of pivotal events in Meursault’s life such as the death of the Arab, as he reflects upon them during his time in prison. ![]() In the latter half of the novel, however, Camus contrasts this objective style with a more complex writing style, which serves to emphasize a more profound level of introspective thought. His writing style not only reflects Meursault’s indifferent attitude but also reveals a lack of interaction with others. This is reflected in Camus’ use of succinct sentences and simple diction employed in the novel. ![]() As a result of his nonchalant attitude, he is often viewed as psychologically detached. The Stranger, by Albert Camus centres around the protagonist Meursault, an emotionless and indifferent individual. ![]() ![]() In 1977 Carter married Mark Pearce, with whom she had one son.Īs well as being a prolific writer of fiction, Carter contributed many articles to The Guardian, The Independent and New Statesman, collected in Shaking a Leg. She spent much of the late 1970s and 1980s as a writer in residence at universities, including the University of Sheffield, Brown University, the University of Adelaide, and the University of East Anglia. She then explored the United States, Asia, and Europe, helped by her fluency in French and German. She was there at the same time as Roland Barthes, who published his experiences in Empire of Signs (1970). In 1969 Angela Carter used the proceeds of her Somerset Maugham Award to leave her husband and relocate for two years to Tokyo, Japan, where she claims in Nothing Sacred (1982) that she "learnt what it is to be a woman and became radicalised." She wrote about her experiences there in articles for New Society and a collection of short stories, Fireworks: Nine Profane Pieces (1974), and evidence of her experiences in Japan can also be seen in The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman (1972). Arthur Hirsch in his review in The Baltimore Sun describes Absalom! Absalom! as Faulkner’s magnum opus, “a karmic soup that permeates contemporary American culture.” It was his best novel yet and the epitome of The Great American Novel. ![]() ![]() ![]() The most common comment about The Vigilant Citizen: "It opened my eyes". Lewis read the review, began to take an interest in the whole topic of human rationality, and, improbably, decided to write a book about Kahneman and Tversky. Why isn’t the market for baseball players “efficient”? What is the source of the biases that Beane was able to exploit? Some of the answers to these questions, we suggested, might be found by applying the insights of the Israeli psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky, on whose work behavioral economics greatly relies. We loved the book-and pointed out that, unbeknownst to the author, it was really about behavioral economics, the combination of economics and psychology in which we shared a common interest, and which we had explored together with respect to public policy and law. Beane was a failed Major League Baseball player who went into the personnel side of the business and, by applying superior “metrics,” had remarkable success with a financial underdog. The book, we noted, had become a sensation, despite focussing on what would seem to be the least exciting aspect of professional sports: upper management. ![]() In 2003, we reviewed “Moneyball,” Michael Lewis’s book about Billy Beane and the Oakland A’s. ![]() ![]() ![]() Not to forget, the lyricism displays incredible depth. On a canvas of rich instrumentalisation and melodies, Nayak has painted his soul. His latest track ‘Udne De’ is unlike anything heard in the diaspora of Indian Music. From establishing his own music and video production setups to releasing 10+ original compositions, he’s redefined what asli independent means. He’s among the very few people who lay the foundations of their success on sheer independence. Ahmedabad based singer-songwriter Darshit Nayak has challenged that notion to its very core. This notion is so deeply seeded in us, that it prompts us to warn those who want to make it big. The hegemony of industries, the need for intensive networking and the massive requirement of money are just a few of the reasons why we hesitate to take that first step. It’s not uncommon for us to let go of our creative endeavours when we realise that the world isn’t that kind. ![]() |
